Proofmode is now a Trusted Camera on RealReel
Photos and videos captured with Proofmode can now be posted on RealReel, a social platform built only for media that is verifiably real. Two separate apps, one open standard.
Nathan
We’re excited to share that Proofmode is now a trusted camera on RealReel. With RealReel’s latest update, photos and videos you capture with the Proofmode app can be posted directly to RealReel, a space on the internet built for media that is verifiably real.
This is the kind of interoperability we have always hoped C2PA Content Credentials would make possible. Proofmode and RealReel are separate teams building separate apps. We never had to agree on a private integration or a shared backend. Proofmode signs each capture with an open, standard C2PA manifest, and RealReel’s verifier checks that manifest the same way it checks media from its own in-app camera.
In RealReel’s words
Dan Kanefsky, developer of RealReel, shared the news on LinkedIn:
Proofmode is now a trusted camera on RealReel!
With our latest update, photos and videos you take in the Proofmode app can now be posted on RealReel.
This is what I appreciate about open standards and open source. RealReel is building a space on the internet with photos and videos that are verifiably real. We could have built a proprietary system that only works with our in-app camera. That would work, but it isn't our goal. Instead, by building on C2PA, we let people use a variety of cameras that add Content Credentials, like Proofmode.
That doesn't mean we accept anything with Content Credentials. We curate our list of trusted cameras, and Proofmode is a natural fit.
Proofmode and RealReel are separate teams building separate apps, and both are on the C2PA Conforming Products List. Our verifier checks a Proofmode capture the same way it checks one from our own camera.
All of our signing and verification code is open source and built on the Content Authenticity Initiative's open-source C2PA SDKs. Proofmode's apps are open source too.
When you're building a platform that requires an immense amount of trust, it helps when the standard underneath it is open for anyone to adopt. And adoption is key to spreading awareness about provenance and Content Credentials.
Shout out to the Proofmode team.
We're here to bring authenticity back to the internet.
Making Content Credentials Useful
Content Credentials only become useful when the places people share media actually read and respect them. Too often, provenance data is stripped away the moment a photo is uploaded. RealReel requires verified capture as the price of entry, and the credentials generated by Proofmode travel with the post.
A few things about this collaboration stand out to us:
- Open standards, not walled gardens. RealReel could have accepted only its own camera. By building on C2PA, it lets people choose the capture tool that works best for them.
- Curation still matters. Having Content Credentials isn’t enough on its own. RealReel keeps a curated list of trusted cameras, and we’re proud that Proofmode made the list.
- Conformance you can check. Both Proofmode and RealReel are on the C2PA Conforming Products List, so the trust between our apps rests on a public, shared process rather than a private deal.
- Open source all the way down. RealReel’s signing and verification code is open source and built on the Content Authenticity Initiative’s open-source C2PA Mobile SDKs, just like Proofmode’s apps.
Try it out
Capture a photo or video with Proofmode, then post it to RealReel and watch it pass verification. I’ve already started posting my daily reality on RealReel.
Thank you to Dan and the RealReel team for building on open standards and for the kind words. If you’re building a platform and want to accept verified captures from Proofmode, get in touch or better yet, just add support the C2PA Standard! We’d love to work with you, but we don’t need a special deal to make that happen.
