Humanitarian Relief - Hurricane Otis Response

Situation

In October 2023, the city of Acapulco, Mexico was struck by a Category 5 hurricane—the most powerful storm ever recorded to make landfall in the area. The hurricane left a trail of devastation, severely impacting iconic landmarks, hotels, tourist attractions, and the homes of millions of residents. The estimated damages reached $12 billion USD, creating an overwhelming challenge for survivors, insurance companies and government recovery efforts. As a result, victims were required to provide detailed documentation of their losses in order to access relief funds and begin rebuilding their lives.

Response

One week after the hurricane made landfall, a ProofMode team member arrived to document the widespread damage, gathering visual evidence from key areas, including landmarks, parks, the marina, luxury hotels, and some of the region’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. Given that Acapulco historically faces a major hurricane approximately every five years, we discussed strategies to improve preparedness and engaged with local leaders to emphasize the importance of proactively documenting property conditions with ProofMode before the next disaster strikes.

Impact

Destruction faced by local communities and businesses was documented through ProofMode’s verifiable photos and videos, potentially streamlining recovery response by insurance and government. Communities can better advocate for their needs with verified digital evidence of their losses.

In addition, disaster preparedness of local communities and businesses was improved to better respond to future disasters.
